Customers are the lifeblood of every business and their expectations of how Businesses should engage them is to deliver an “experience” not just a “transaction” – as they expect Businesses to know them, be aware of their user journey,  reach them via their preferred channels and even predict their wants through accurate recommendations. Yes, the skills required for every marketer now goes beyond just “selling” but include customer success, digital transformation expert, data analyst and much more.

Beyond gaining an understanding of consumers, being able to reach them via the most effective channels is critical, which is why having a multichannel solution is not just a “good to have” but a “must-have ” for Businesses. In Africa which is a “mobile-first” market, the 2 most effective and powerful channels for customer engagement consumers offline and online are SMS and WhatsApp respectively!

Africa currently has over 750 million mobile users, all of whom have the ability to receive SMS which is device, operating system and network provider agnostic and does not have the limitation of needing the internet or data – simply put, everyone who has a mobile device can text!

“Bulk SMS” is a solution that has been used by Brands since the inception of GSM in Africa for the promotion of Businesses and services via SMS to mobile subscribers at scale. However, this simple phenomenon has evolved with the availability of Martech platforms that leverage “data and insights” to enable more “intelligent” and “hyper-targeted” messaging to consumers as against the typical “spray and pray” approach. This means that a Brand can promote their new app to only consumers with smartphones rather than feature phones, or a newly opened retail store can send messages that will entice customers in that vicinity with discounts redeemable in-store – this sort of “intelligence” is what guarantees higher conversions, better returns on ad spend and lowers the cost of customer acquisitions.

For online customer engagement, WhatsApp is by far the most dominant channel for reaching consumers in Africa compared to other similar platforms and apps. With over  300 million online mobile subscribers (40% of mobile subscribers),  projected to hit 475 million by 2025 (according to Statista), WhatsApp adoption is at 97% in Kenya, 96% in South Africa and 95% in Nigeria (according to the Global Web Index’s 2020 Social Media User Trends Report). Marketers and leading brands alike therefore cannot afford to ignore or downplay WhatsApp as an effective customer engagement channel when there are over 2 billion monthly global users on WhatsApp from 180 countries, sending 100million messages daily.

WhatsApp is not just a messaging app but has now become the dominant multimedia platform allowing features such as video/voice calls, sharing QR codes, weblinks, location pins, sharing photos, audio and videos and much more. Thus ensuring effective customer engagement for Brands.

Due to the ubiquitous nature of the solution, the WhatsApp Business Solution can be deployed for various use cases by a spectrum of medium and large businesses across verticals. It can be used by Banks as a digital channel for customers to carry out transactions such as getting bank statements, making payments and transfers, obtaining loans etc. e-Commerce businesses can promote deals, discounts and offers such a Black Friday deals, allow customers to track deliveries, share videos detailing specific items or products etc.

Telcos can offer airtime and data packages, notify subscribers of new services and offers as well as allow them to sign up for automatic top-up. Airlines and Travel agencies can send tickets and boarding passes to passengers while FMCG Companies can reward loyal customers with discount coupons, send them location pins for events, run surveys, quizzes and lots more.

Other benefits of this solution are:

  • Sending out templated and interactive messages at scale to thousands of opted-in subscribers.
  • Connection to bots to cater to a wide range of automated communication with consumers
  • Integration with back-end systems e.g. CRM, payment solution, marketing automation platforms etc., to cater to various business activities and needs.

In addition to being a WhatsApp Business Solution Provider, Terragon is the only African CDP company, listed as a partner for the Facebook Conversions API; a tool which helps businesses deliver personalised ads without third-party cookies. Terragon also offers Businesses in Africa access to millions of potential customers in Africa, through its marketing platforms; and provides the intelligence and deep insights needed to run hyper-targeted and personalized customer acquisition and retention campaigns, cost-effectively.

Making Mobile offline data more intelligent in Africa. /making-mobile-offline-data-more-intelligent-in-africa/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=making-mobile-offline-data-more-intelligent-in-africa Thu, 21 Oct 2021 13:00:46 +0000 /?p=4734

Offline/Online mobile phone subscription in Africa.

Africa has a diverse population of 1.2bn people. According to GSMA, there were 850 million mobile subscriptions and only 300 million internet users in 2020. The GSMA also reports by 2021, there will be 500million mobile internet users in Africa – It is clear that Africa is still predominantly an offline market, a fact that marketers must be mindful in developing their marketing strategy and campaigns.

This distinctive feature of the African consumer market being more offline than online is evident in the ways some Brands offer their products and services to consumers, across various  sectors. For instance, in Nigeria, all top tier Banks offer various services such as account opening, payment transactions, airtime purchase, utility payment and even loan requests via USSD (Unstructured Supplementary Service Data), an offline mobile channel – making their services available to a much wider consumer base than the limitation of their App (which requires consumers to be data subscribers). In the last quarter of 2020, N1.63 trillion was transferred by Nigerians via USSD, while online transactions were 569 million by the end of Q3 2020.

A key point to note on online subscriber data usage on the continent is that it could be misleading. This is because, as a result of the high cost of purchasing data, some online subscribers buy data to use only at specific times i.e. switch on and off when not in use. For instance, a mechanic with a data plan would switch it on to notify his client to pick up his vehicle to avoid a paid voice call or even SMS costs. Therefore, although he can be qualified as an “online subscriber” the most effective way to engage him may not be online. Therefore to thrive, Brands must learn to take full advantage of the basic offline channel ie SMS to reach and engage the African consumer.

Bulk SMS for customer engagement…or spamming?

Using SMS to engage customers is nothing new; since the launch of GSM services, “Bulk SMS” has been a way for Brands to reach customers. Bulk SMS involves the dissemination of messaging to a  large number of mobile subscribers. However, due to the pervasiveness  of the channel it has been abused by unscrupulous Brands and digital agencies who frequently spam customers with irrelevant and unwanted messages constantly, inadvertently leading to negative brand experiences and frustrated customers. For instance, a Muslim would not appreciate being bombarded with messages urging him to try out the latest alcoholic beverage offered by an FMCG company.

So how can we make offline mobile data more “intelligent”, help Brands enable hyper-targeted customer engagement and give customers the sort of meaningful experience they desire from Brands?

Data-powered Marketing technology (Martech) solutions  for  Africa.

The answer lies with data-powered marketing technology platforms (such as a Customer data Platform – CDP) specifically made to cater to this peculiar need, within the strictest forms of data privacy. A platform that enables a data supply side on one hand and a business demand side on the other.

A data supply side which aggregates data from sources and provides the most relevant and useful data sets of consumers at scale i.e. telcos and a business demand side which Brands are able to leverage to gain relevant insights  and reach their existing customers and prospects.

When such intelligence powered by Telco data is applied, Brands experience a higher rate of success and customer conversions because:

  • The customer fits the right target market/audience for the Brands product or service
  • The customer expects to receive messages from the Brand
  • The Brand is able to cross sell and upsell other products and services as there is a better understanding of who the customer is, their preferences and interest.

Telco and Data Monetisation

Telecom companies have an untapped asset in the torrents of customer data at their disposal which is exponentially rising every day – Data required by Brands to gain better understanding of their consumers in order to deliver personalised engagements. Therein lies the opportunity for both parties, an opportunity for Data monetisation which can be fulfilled through marketing technology (Martech) platforms.

Over the past few years Telcos have experienced an erosion of revenues from their traditional, core offerings i.e. voice and SMS, losing out to subscribers embracing instant messaging and internet-based voice and video calls such as WhatsApp (which recorded 2B active monthly users in 180 countries sending 100M messages a day according to WhatsApp’s 2021 Internal Data)

Telcos have access to various range data sets including demographic, geographic, interests etc due to the types of service being offered, which could help Brands across various verticals (retail, financial services, FMCG, advertising, healthcare, public services, etc) understand their customers better, deliver hyper-targeted campaigns resulting in higher RoI and lower conversion costs.

In the online digital space, Global Big tech companies monetize their data by helping Businesses improve their online advertising campaign performance, resulting in exponential revenues. Search engine giant Google, for example, made $146.92 billion in revenues from their advertising arm of their business in 2020 by processing tons of data and enabling personalized digital advertising for millions of businesses – small mom and pop shops to large multinational enterprises alike. This helps them to capture even more revenue than before. Similarly, Amazon develops algorithms that enable it to personalize online shopping to match customer interests. As a result, it generates per-user revenues that are significantly higher than those of its competitors. “We leveraged Amazon Personalize to provide product recommendations to customers on our apps using customer purchase data. With Amazon Personalize, we have achieved a massive 17% increment in the average order value, enabling us to fill customer orders immediately while increasing the overall basket size.” – Hassaan Sadiq, CTO, Co-founder, GrocerApp

This is a way telcos could consider the opportunity which lies with offline data monetisation, by working with competent MarTech vendors like Terragon to offer this service to businesses in Africa.

Terragon, is Africa’s leading data and marketing technology company that offers data-driven multichannel marketing solutions that have helped businesses (SMBs, large enterprises and Digital Agencies) over time, execute highly targeted campaigns by aggregating, enriching and activating consumer data for personalized experiences. RECOGNISING BUSINESSES IN AFRICA

Here’s what Francis Obiajulu, Digital & Data Driven Marketing Manager, Nigerian Breweries Plc, one of our Enterprise CDP Customers had to say, after winning an award from the Global Heineken Office, along side 15 other OpCos:

“As a key African OpCo of the Heineken brand, our ability to work with other Regional offices to deliver on set goals in terms of KPIs was fully hinged on our understanding of the market landscape within which we operate and a deep understanding of our consumers. When we think of being able to fulfil our consumers’ expectation of delivering personalized engagement, we could not afford to ignore or downplay the “mobile-first” perspective of the African consumer.

And so when we sought a Consumer Data Platform (CDP) vendor, it was critical for us to work with a partner with a marketing technology solution made for Africa. This means that features and functionalities such a Telco Integration for access to relevant customer data, ability to collect and enrich profiles, availability of offline (SMS and USSD) and online (WhatsApp) activation channels for consumer engagement as well as a solution for effective digital advertising without 3rd party cookies (such as the Facebook Conversions API) were non-negotiable. Special thanks to our technology partner Terragon Group. Looking forward to achieving more feats together.”

The International School of Advertising(ISA), Kenya is one of the SMBs who have adopted the Facebook Conversions API solution. Susan Makau, the Managing Director has this to say:

“we typically run lead generation campaigns via other platforms, but we are excited to use the Facebook Conversions API solution on the Terragon CDP, which allows us carry out our campaigns securely and efficiently without third party cookies, which is set to be phased out in 2023”

The Story: Why we built Terragon Prime /the-story-why-we-built-terragon-prime/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=the-story-why-we-built-terragon-prime Tue, 28 Sep 2021 16:30:00 +0000 /?p=4640

Terragon started out as a VAS/mobile company and at the same time played in the agency space off the back of brands needing to connect with consumers in Africa and mobile being one of the most utilised forms of connectivity. We built an end-to-end agency from ground up, and specialised in delivering mobile marketing solutions to SMBs and large enterprises.

As the mobile device has evolved and internet adoption in Africa continues to grow, over 80% of internet connections are generated from mobile devices. It shows the real importance of mobile in the entire narrative around connectivity and interactions on the continent. When brands are looking to connect with consumers, the mobile device is still the most ubiquitous channel to do that. On the one hand, there is the need to help brands navigate the journey of how to increasingly engage with customers to drive business value.

Marketing technology continues to evolve and the world is constantly yearning for consumer privacy and data protection. We are now in an era where all the things that formed the basis for online advertising, from 3rd party cookies to anonymous and non anonymous targeting and retargeting are under threat.

So the most important question now is ‘how do we ensure that businesses in Africa are not left behind in a post cookie world?” How do we ensure that all the technologies that are in place to improve marketing, especially online continue to work even as the world moves from privacy intrusive solutions?

Terragon understands this need and as we always say, no one knows Africans like we do, simply because of our experience working with the telcos whom if we go by the identification of consumers based on a unique ID like the phone number or the MSISDN, it places the telco at the heart of data supply that will be used to power consumer connections and interactions over the coming years.

Once we looked at ourselves, we came to realise that we have vast experience in deploying mobile marketing solutions, great relationships with telcos across the continent and have a fair understanding of brands’ needs in terms of driving marketing programs because of our agency experience. So, we have went ahead to build what we would call Africa’s first true Customer Data Platform that takes a look at the consumer from a first party data perspective, provides robust enrichment to ensure that we are given advertisers a true and robust picture of African consumers, to allow brands to connect with them better and give them more personalised experiences.

So we started this out by building an Enterprise level CDP, which we have deployed across different key verticals today, including FMCGs, financial service providers like banks and some Fintechs and we have been operating this at an enterprise level.

However, we quickly learned that marketing technology adoption on the continent is not as fast as you would experience in developed markets simply because of costs or the organization’s stage of digital maturity, amongst other reasons. Now, we must also recognize that Africa is heavily powered by SMBs. It’s not so different from the rest of the  world, but we see a lot of that happening here such that less than 10% of organizations are large enterprises. The rest of them are small businesses, and they drive the majority of business contribution to the GDP.

We want to be sure we are ready for scale and that is what has informed the need to develop a CDP solution that will not just be for enterprises but something that small businesses can utilise.

So we went ahead and built Terragon Prime; an end-to-end marketing platform that allows for data aggregation, enrichment and activation through multi-channelled solutions to ensure that both small medium and large businesses are able to have access to hundreds of millions of profiles of Africans that we have within our repository, Thanks to our relationship with telcos and other data supply partners, business of all sizes can access consumers for marketing purposes across multiple channels, either for acquisition or retention purposes.

If you already have your own customer data, upload it unto your Terragon Prime cloud CDP and enrich your customer profiles, create robust and unified IDs of their customer, create audience segments and drive multi-channel activation for customer retention, upsell and cross sell. You can also expand your audiences through our look-alike modelling tools powered by proprietary AI and ML engines to increase your reach and acquire new customers that are very similar to their high value existing customers.

We built Prime to solve an African problem, which is the need to reach African consumers at scale  and provide the most personalised experience possible.

Welcome to Data Driven Marketing for everyone. If you’d like to take an early spin, please CLICK HERE to join the waiting list and you will be given early access to Terragon Prime (Beta), launching this October.

Thank you.

Conversions Marketing: Turning your “Prospects” into “Brand Loyalists”. /conversions-marketing-turning-your-prospects-into-brand-loyalists/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=conversions-marketing-turning-your-prospects-into-brand-loyalists Wed, 22 Sep 2021 14:30:32 +0000 /?p=4636

The ultimate goal for every digital marketer is “conversion” i.e. moving leads, prospects or potential customers down the marketing funnel, turning them into brand loyalists and advocates. Conversions happen when a site visitor or consumer carries out a desired “action”, as defined by the marketer or advertiser; In other words, simply getting someone to respond to a call-to-action. It differs from simple Brand awareness which is typically in the form of a simple digital advertising display i.e. “impressions”.

As much as Brands see benefits from awareness campaigns i.e. “impressions”, “conversions marketing” offers a lot more value than “awareness marketing”. It enables tracking, attribution and measurement which is a critical element of today’s digital marketing and advertising. Also referred to as “performance marketing”, “conversions marketing” is essentially the return on investment of a Brand’s ad spend. It offers marketers a number of benefits including measurement of actual campaign performance for necessary improvement, the viability of Ad spend for necessary optimisation, total conversion costs necessary for future planning, the most ( and least) effective customer engagement channels, the relevance of ads and channels based on consumer interaction, etc.

Google Ads defines a conversion as,“An action that is counted when somebody interacts with an ad (e.g. when they click a text ad or view a video ad), and then they take an action you have defined as valuable to your business, such as making an online purchase or a phone call to your business from their mobile phone”

Conversions Marketing takes “awareness” a step further beyond “impressions” thereby allowing marketers to make the most out of their existing budget to engage consumers for lead generation, acquisition, retention or product cross selling and upselling.

According to a recent Gartner report, marketers are facing reduced budget allocation due to the Covid-19 disruption. With reduced marketing budgets, getting the most mileage out of every allocated dollar is key, therefore conversions marketing is even more important as it enables measurement for spend optimisation and higher returns.

This strategy could mean different “actions” depending on the advertiser’s verticals and aim of the campaign. For instance, an FMCG company may simply want to send visitors to a page to sign up for a product  newsletter or watch a product awareness video; a Bank may require completion of an account opening form, an SMB may want conclusion of a transaction while an Agency may want to increase app download for their Client (Brand). All of these instances point to a consumer going a step further than a view or a click on an advert.

A typical marketing funnel shows the customer journey from Awareness (where a lead or prospect is made aware of a brand or product) to Advocacy (where the prospect has become a loyal customer and starts to advocate for the brand). Taking the prospect from awareness, to consideration, purchase and then advocacy is only possible through “conversions” and “intelligent reach” which is the use of data to prequalify and target potential customers.

At a recent roundtable session organised by Terragon, which was held in June 2021 on Data-Driven Marketing, a number of Industry practitioners gave their expert opinion on  “conversions marketing” and the importance of Data in executing a high performing marketing strategy.

According to Luisa Mazinter, MMA SA Chair Emeritus & Chief Marketing Officer at Cubesquare  Advisory,

“Every marketer experiences a similar problem where you have to justify every single cent you spend, to the board or financial director or the CFO. Data is your friend and the more you gather, the more powerful you become and this can help justify your investment.”

Francis Obiajulu, the Digital and Data-Driven Marketing Manager at Nigeria Breweries (A Heineken Company) talked about the various important KPIs which must be factored in measuring campaign performance;

“In Marketing, we see more than just numbers. Talking about setting KPIs or benchmarks  like brand health, top of mind awareness and other variables considered when referring to  the outcome of our different strategies or campaigns. Ultimately, this has to lead to sales.  With more data, you can detect how your “non-tangible” KPIs affect the tangible KPIs in  terms of numbers.”

Emphasising on the need to leverage data in marketing strategies for either “conversion” or “awareness”, General Manager of Programmatic, Search and Social, OMG MENA, Roli Okoro added:

Roli Okoro noted: In this part of the world (MENA), we have gone beyond impressions and clicks…. It’s more down to know if my ad is viewable, did the user engage with that ad, how much time was spent on my site and a product detail page, partnerships they had with e-commerce companies, and so on.

On first party data being a critical element of an effective digital advertising strategy for high returns on investment, Ms. Okoro added:

“It’s important to ensure you are eliminating waste by delivering an ad with the right message to the right user, at the right time and on the right device. As a brand, if you want  to ensure that that media spend goes a long way or hits your KPIs, you need to look at the  existing datasets you have, and how you are working with your First Party Data to  understand your offline and online audiences.”

Damilola Abodunrin, Business Director/Head, iProspect Nigeria, also added:  Data is important but it’s important to know what data you are collecting because data by  itself is pretty broad. Data is multifaceted and when you have a clear understanding of the  kind of data you need your objectives are better streamlined and you can work towards the  answer in more efficient terms. … If your product is not meeting the needs of people, your  data will tell you right off the bat.

The Terragon Data-Driven Marketing roundtable series is held every other month and is focused on promoting and advocating for Brands and Agencies to leverage the power of Data and Insights for more effective digital marketing strategies and campaigns. The next session is scheduled for August 2021.

Terragon is Africa’s leading data aggregation, enrichment, consumer insights and activation platform, which helps Brands gain a deeper understanding of African consumers in order to create and deliver better experiences that drive meaningful relationships.

Executing High-Performance Marketing Strategies Using Data …for better marketing campaigns and customer engagement. /executing-high-performance-marketing-strategies-using-data-for-better-marketing-campaigns-and-customer-engagement/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=executing-high-performance-marketing-strategies-using-data-for-better-marketing-campaigns-and-customer-engagement Wed, 23 Jun 2021 16:30:00 +0000 /?p=4218

The concept of Data-Driven Marketing, which involves the use of relevant customer and event/conversions data for planning and executing marketing campaigns,  has been touted as the future of Marketing, rightly so because it has proven to yield the most successful and cost-effective marketing campaign results, offering Advertisers better ROI and lower cost of customer acquisitions through its “customer-focused” approach. According to Invesp, businesses that employ data-driven personalized engagements deliver five to eight times the ROI on marketing spend, which is most likely why eMarketer in 2018, reported an increase in budget for data-driven marketing by over 40% of brands.
In recent times, the addressable market for Digital marketing in Africa has exponentially grown as consumers have adopted the use of various mobile and digital channels and touchpoints to carry out basic functions – interactions, entertainment, payment, purchase, education etc. These customers are therefore demanding more personalized experiences, and so it’s no surprise that almost 66% of marketers are personalizing their communications based on consumer data, according to Engagebay.

Digitization which is responsible for this shift in consumer behaviour presents an immense opportunity for Brands (Advertisers)  to reach and engage consumers in a more direct and personal way. With a better understanding of consumers, their interest and preferences, Brands can respond in ways that endear themselves to the consumers, build trust and loyalty thereby encouraging retention and preventing churn.

Competitive advantage in business today can be attributed to how much insight Brands can generate from their customer first-party Data, and how it can be put to productive use in a privacy-compliant manner. As a Mckinsey Report on the Age of Analytics puts it, “data is now a critical corporate asset.”

The advantages of data-driven marketing are limitless – better consumer experience, campaign optimisation, segmentation, personalisation, increased ROI, and lots more. A Forbes report on Data-Driven Marketing shows that companies who deploy data-driven marketing are six times more likely to remain profitable year-over-year.

In order to unlock these benefits, Terragon – Africa’s leading Data and Enterprise Software Platform has developed the “Data-Driven Marketing Roundtable Series”; with the aim of complementing the efforts of Marketers (Advertisers and Agencies)  by exposing them to “data and insights-driven” solutions and technology tools with which they can not only “intelligently reach” their customers, but go a step further with calls to action – thereby enabling measurable outcomes for their marketing campaigns.

Speaking after the June edition of the  Roundtable Series which was focused on “Beyond Clicks”, Terragon’s VP, Marketing Osarugue Awani noted that the Roundtable series would enhance the growth and adoption of data-driven marketing among marketers (Brands and Agencies) across the continent. She stated “we are proud to lead the charge on Data-Driven Marketing in Africa, in partnership with the regional arm of the Mobile Marketers Association (MMA). We had a very impressive turnout at the June edition and that is a testament to African Marketers’ need for the knowledge we are sharing on this platform. To make the sessions even more impactful we’ve invited renowned thought leaders and industry experts from various verticals and other mature markets to share their experiences, opinions and real case studies – so that attendees leave each session with deep, practical knowledge on the subject matter.”

Terragon is the leading data aggregation and enrichment, consumer insights and activation platform that helps Brands gain a deeper understanding of African consumers in order to create and deliver better experiences that drive meaningful relationships. Terragon is also the only partner for the Facebook Conversions API in Africa and the first African Company to be verified by the CDP Institute.

One of the many challenges faced by organisations today is which software or technology tool to invest in or deploy; with which to achieve superior data and insights-driven Business Intelligence needed to gain competitive advantage? McKinsey reports that the year 2020 saw significant increases in the volume, quality, speed, and variety of data across organizations. And as the scale of data grows, thanks to accelerated digital growth and maturity globally, so does the need for proper storage, processing and utilisation. The Customer Data Platform (CDP) is one of such powerful tools Businesses must consider in their data-driven business strategy.

Businesses can ideally select a preferred CDP Vendor, based on certain unique features required such as the Terragon CDP which comes uniquely equipped with over 108 million encrypted profiles of Nigerian customers; however, not getting cross-functional buy-in from various departments or key stakeholders within the Organisation prevents the full realisation of the immense benefits a CDP offers towards achieving  KPIs and Business objectives.

Should it be merely an executive decision made by the CEO for Enterprise-wide implementation or usage or a Customer Success/Relations tool for Customer engagement to encourage loyalty, or a software/technology tool owned by the IT unit for enterprise-wide customer data syncing, processing and business support, or the Marketing department to enable personalised customer engagements? The right answer is – the CDP should be utilised by all of these parties as it helps the organisation achieve both short term and long term goals. So, irrespective of which department initiates or drives the adoption of the CDP, other departments’ and stakeholders’  understanding of the substantial value which could be unlocked and how it contributes to them achieving their KPIs, fast tracks the organisation’s digital maturity.

From the CEO’s perspective, the value the CDP offers must ultimately tie to the Business’s overall objectives ie growth through revenue increase and or cost-cutting; such as the Terragon CDP which guarantees a lower cost of customer acquisition as a short term benefit and long term increase of customer value, when fully deployed effectively.

The Marketing Team is first and foremost concerned with understanding the customer. What compels people to engage, and why do they keep coming back (or not)? In today’s data-driven world where CMOs make decisions based on customer insights, the CDP plays a central role in their strategic vision. Data-driven marketing enables them to gain high returns on Ad Spend and lower Cost of Customer Conversion; which makes them both relevant and important to both the CFO and the CEO. The fact that the CDP allows for carrying out measurable customer engagements and importantly, the ability to attribute sales directly to data-driven marketing is invaluable.

Since the use of data and insights is obviously critical to a Business strategic objective, the IT/CTO must realise they are major stakeholders and in some cases custodians of the platform. The CDP must meet certain criteria such as offering the highest level of Data privacy, always-on availability, scalability, redundancy and data recovery should there be an unexpected disaster as this ties to their performance indicators. Also, the CDP’s interaction with other data platforms for data aggregation and ingestion is critical for seamless activation and usage.

For the Sales Team, the CDP can guarantee customer acquisition through a number of online (web) and offline (mobile) channels. The Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning feature aids in based product recommendations for proper upselling &  cross-selling as well as look-alike modelling which also enables accurate targeting of prospective customers. . The

To help Organisations achieve superior Business Intelligence, the Terragon CDP checks all the boxes for the various departments and stakeholder expectations by providing deep insights and understanding of the consumers, their behaviours and interests. It also offers continuous ingestion of data through the post-campaign feedback loop, coupled with the unification feature where data cleaning is carried out and enrichment through multiple 3rd party data sources.

Summarily, the place of the CDP in today’s data-driven marketing cannot be overemphasized; and in a perfect world, all stakeholders actually realise the advantage and potential of adopting a CDP enterprise-wide; and jointly canvass for investment in one. However, having just one department or stakeholder as a product evangelist or advocate within the Organization is a good enough starting point, until the enterprise reaches full data usage maturity.

Terragon is Africa’s leading Data and Marketing Technology Company. The Terragon CDP aggregates data from a variety of touchpoints and creates a single customer view of each customer, giving deep consumer insights and predictive recommendations through Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence. It also enables data enrichment from various supply sources and an omnichannel activation feature for online (web) and offline (mobile) reach. Terragon is the only CDP company listed by Facebook as partners for the Conversions API solution in Africa.

Adopting an Omnichannel Marketing Strategy for Better ROI /adopting-an-omnichannel-marketing-strategy-for-better-roi/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=adopting-an-omnichannel-marketing-strategy-for-better-roi Tue, 09 Mar 2021 07:21:29 +0000 /?p=3989

The relationship between brands and consumers in today’s digital world has shifted. In the past, brands could easily define the message and pre-determine the pathway of the customer’s journey. However, with consumers’ embrace of multiple devices (mobile, email, web, POS etc) as interaction points, the journey is now a multi-dimensional, multi-platform customer journey. This means that customers can appear at any time online (on the web) or offline (on mobile via SMS or USSD) – the path to conversion is now completely owned by the customer.

Interestingly, amidst this multiplicity of devices and platforms, the consumer also wants a seamless personalized experience across all platforms and devices. He doesn’t want to interact with an Advert via SMS and still gets bombarded with that same Advert when he logs into his Facebook account on the web. This is where Omnichannel Marketing becomes important.

The use of various channels to create one, unified experience for your customers is what is referred to as Omnichannel Marketing. This includes both traditional and digital channels, point-of-sale, in-store, and online experiences. It involves the creation of a seamless message that adjusts to your customer based on their behaviour through your sales funnel, providing the ultimate personalized customer experience. According to Forbes, “brands with superior customer experience bring in 5.7 times more revenue than competitors that lag in customer experience. In fact, 86% of buyers will pay more for a great customer experience.”

It is easy to confuse “Omnichannel marketing” with “Multichannel marketing.” While multichannel marketing starts with the company and moves outwards to the different channels, omnichannel marketing starts with the consumer and interacts between channels for a seamless experience. By this simple explanation, the fact that Brands will spend far less and get better performance on their Ad Spends adopting an omnichannel marketing strategy versus a multichannel marketing strategy is evident.

Omnichannel marketing pulls the customer into the centre of the strategy, and the channels that the customer uses to engage with the brand not only have a unified message, but that message adapts to each touchpoint a customer has with the brand. This means that the messages the customer sees, regardless of the channel, will update once the customer has taken the desired action.

For instance, with omnichannel marketing, a bank customer who started an account opening session via his mobile, but drops off and later logs into his Facebook account, should see an ad reminding him to continue with the account opening, from where he stopped rather than being targeted as a new lead. This will guarantee a top-notch customer experience and reduce cost on ad spend.

With the level of personalisation that omnichannel marketing offers, more savvy Brands invest in technology tools and software such as a Customer Data Platform (CDP) to achieve this. According to a PwC report, the number of companies that invest in omnichannel marketing has jumped from 20% to more than 80% since 2020.

The Terragon Customer Data Platform (CDP) is one of such powerful tools that several multinational FMCG Brands and top tier Banks have invested in to get ahead of the curve in superior omnichannel customer experience. With online (web) and offline (mobile) activation channels, Brands can reach their customers intelligently via email, SMS on their mobile phones to their Facebook via the Facebook Conversions API.-With strategic partnerships with major Telcos, publishers, digital Platforms, Ad exchanges to enable reach via mobile, web, email and most recently a direct Server-to-Server integration to Facebook as the only African-founded CDP partner for the Facebook Conversions API in Africa; the Terragon CDP is uniquely structured to help Brands execute an effective omnichannel marketing strategy and ultimately make better returns on their Ad Spend.

The Terragon CDP also helps Brands to understand their customers by aggregating their customers’ first-party data from various sources, enriching it with data sourced from variousthird-party data supply-side partners and then giving a 360-degree view of customers. With well-modelled Machine learning and Artificial Intelligence, the CDP is able to segment these customers according to various data points (demographic, geographic, behavioural and psychographics etc) and allows Brands to activate campaigns via various channels – mobile (SMS and USSD), email, web and social media (Facebook).

With continuous ingestion of data and Machine learning analytics by the CDP, Brands can tell exactly where each customer is on the sales conversion journey/funnel to allow for tailored adverts specific to each customer, based on their unique journey till they convert. This as well as the feedback loop capability (post-campaign), provides Brands with continuous updates for data enrichment and a better understanding of their customers, in order to know the most effective way to reach them. For instance, a consumer Brand may choose to reach a millennial via social media advert, a middle-aged white-collar worker via email and an artisan via SMS to promote the same stable product. As the Customer continues to evolve over time, these channel preferences may change and these updates can be detected via the CDP.

In today’s world where there’s a lot of attention on data privacy, customers are increasingly wary of how much information brands have about them and how frequently brands are able to reach them. This is a legitimate concern that the Terragon CDP caters to by adopting the strictest of data privacy and governance measures.

Using your Customer Data to accelerate Business Growth /using-your-customer-data-to-accelerate-business-growth/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=using-your-customer-data-to-accelerate-business-growth Fri, 26 Feb 2021 17:10:00 +0000 /?p=3943

First party Customer data is the most valuable data businesses own and is the starting point for any form of customer engagement. Now more than ever, the need for businesses to own and manage first-party data could be the difference between staying in business or going under.
Customer behaviour is dynamic and ever-changing as well as the landscape within which they operate (for instance the impact of COVID-19). The first step towards understanding and responding to customer needs is through data – to prevent churn and increase lifetime value.

First-party data refers to information you collect directly from your customers or audience, from various touchpoints – CRM, actions or interests demonstrated across your websites or apps, customer feedback, completed customer surveys, forms etc. First-party data is usually consented and so privacy concerns surrounding it is minimal.

Over the years customer journey has become a multi-platform and multi-device, such that their footprint goes across various touchpoints including desktops, mobile phones, TVs, apps, watches and lots more – thereby creating the need for Advertisers to have a unified view of each customer. With the help of a number of tracking methods – including the use of third-party cookies, advertisers have been able to collect data and follow customer journeys and tailor ads to suit their preference and interests. However, with customers’ increased attention to data privacy, stricter regulations to enforce compliance and phasing out third-party cookies especially by Google Chrome which tracks over 60% of internet users, the ability to track customers and serve personalized Ads this same way is significantly threatened.

While a few solutions are being developed to solve this – the importance of First-Party Data remains a common consensus; giving rise to the importance and need for a software to aggregate and manage data in a privacy-compliant manner – a Customer Data Platform (CDP)

A CDP is designed to pull data from multiple sources and touchpoints and create a 360-degree view of each customer. This allows for personalised and contextual advertising. For instance, to market a specific brand of beer to male customers in the East during a premier league football match, as against a female in the North; or promote travel insurance to a Bank customer who just made a payment for a flight ticket.

This sort of segmentation and personalised marketing capability is made possible on the Terragon CDP. Uniquely equipped with over a 108 million profiles to enable enrichment of First party data using strict data privacy compliance methods, Advertisers are able to create audience buckets based on various criteria including demography, location, behaviour and interest; and target them via available multi-channel options – offline (mobile) and online (web).

The Terragon CDP utilises Artificial Intelligence (AI) and well modelled Machine Learning (ML) to allow Advertisers create lookalike audiences that mirror their best customers, thereby expanding their reach (beyond their existing customers) and giving a higher chance of conversion. This enables a more “intelligent reach” and minimises the limitation of solely using first-party data for campaigns such as lead generation.

We had a little chat with our CEO, Elo Umeh, on the importance of first-party data management and changing face of online advertising.

How do you see Brands demonstrating the importance of first-party data?

Our Customer Data Platform (CDP) was used by a top global FMCG Brand in Nigeria to surpass their target of building a verified database of their customers with 1 million first-party data. Owing to the success of the previous target, the brand is currently in discussion with us to grow that database to 4 million this year. A number of Top Tier banks have also been using our CDP to enrich their first-party database for various levels of customer engagement including cross-selling and upselling their products and they have reported an improvement in returns on their Ad spend.”

What is unique about the Terragon CDP?

No one knows Africans like we do. We are the only Africa-founded Customer Data Platform (CDP) Company in the market today and the only Africa-founded CDP partner for the Facebook Conversions API. Our unique Telco integrations give us access to over 108 million consumer profiles, driving our enhanced market relevance and reach by offering seamless offline (mobile) and online (web) channel access and continuous data ingestion. With these very strong Unique Selling Propositions, some of the largest digital platforms from Google, Facebook, Telcos such as MTN, and several others have given a nod to our platform”

How will advertisers leverage First-party data to serve personalized and targeted ads without third-party cookies?

“Some of the seismic shifts happening within the digital world are being influenced by the phasing out of cookies. The software string called cookies has had a significant role to play in the growth of the digital advertising industry to a $300bn market. Cookies enable seamless attribution and measurement, which is at the core of digital. Without cookies, brands will be unable to retarget, segment, track and deliver personalized ads; and will have to rely on software platforms like the Terragon CDP to manage first-party data in facilitating the measurement and attribution process.”

Is there anything Terragon is doing to help brands navigate the cookie-less future?

“Our big, bold bet over the last two years has been focused on solving this problem. We have developed a Proprietary Customer Data Platform that offers any company that seeks to reach its customers online with a tool to improve and sustain their digital advertising investments. The Terragon Customer Data Platform offers a broad spectrum of features that is customized to the needs of businesses in emerging markets. The product and innovation process has kept in mind the unique usage patterns of mobile subscribers in developing and underdeveloped markets. For instance, digital is incomplete in Africa if native Telco channels – SMS and USSD are not considered as a communication channel, with the data points therein forming a key touchpoint of the customers.”
